I won’t deny my Igbo ancestry — Ohanaeze President-General Azuta-Mbata
The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, has reaffirmed his Igbo identity.
Azuta-Mbata vowed never to deny his Igbo ancestry despite criticisms over his emergence as the President-General of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation.
He spoke while hosting Opobo elder statesmen in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, on Monday.
According to Azuta-Mbata: “Say whatever you like, from now till tomorrow; I’m not going to deny my ancestry. We are related. Why are you shouting me down?
“We must connect our people to a much larger platform for development. Politics is played from Abuja, not here. We must operate at the highest stage of this Nigerian project.”
Azuta-Mbata also reiterated his commitment to supporting Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State and fostering unity among ethnic groups.
The Rivers State-born politician emerged as Ohanaeze’s President-General during an election held on January 20 in Imo State.
His emergence followed the death of the late Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and the completion of his tenure by NzeChukwu Fidelis.
