Foundation Commemorates World  Sickle Cell Awareness Day 

In commemoration of World Sickle Cell Awareness Day, Mirror Mí Creations in partnership with The Bunker, hosted a deeply moving and educational event on Thursday, June 19, 2025, in Abuja.

With the slogan “Shining the Light on Sickle Cell,” the gathering brought together healthcare professionals, advocates, warriors, and members of the public to raise awareness about sickle cell disorder, confront stigma, and chart a way forward for better management in Nigeria.

Khadija Adams, Team Lead at Mirror Mí Creations, highlighted the importance of providing platforms for awareness, advocacy, and empowerment for those living with the genetic disorder. She emphasized the organization’s ongoing commitment to educating the public and supporting affected individuals and families.

Oghenekeno Joshua Ekpokpobe, a seasoned public health researcher and the Director of Monitoring and Evaluation at the Resilient Communities Building Initiative (RCBI), spoke passionately about the need for inclusive healthcare policies, community education, and robust early detection programs while delivering his keynote address. His address resonated strongly with attendees, calling for systemic change and sustained advocacy.

Adding an artistic touch to the event was a spoken word performance by Chineye Uchendu, who captivated the audience with a powerful piece exploring pain, resilience, and hope in the sickle cell journey.

The event also featured a factual session titled “Sickle Cell Unmasked: Facts, Risks, and the Power of Early Detection” presented by Grace Izuwa, Assistant Director at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and a seasoned medical laboratory scientist. Izuwa emphasized the critical importance of genotype screening, public sensitization, and early intervention.

A particularly emotional highlight was the screening of a three-part testimonial video titled “Wounds That Breathe”, documenting the harrowing yet inspiring journey of Ajefu Catherine, a young Nigerian woman living with sickle cell. Her story, which unfolded in three segments, her pain, her struggles, and finally, shared hope, left many in the audience visibly moved.

Addressing the mental health dimensions of sickle cell, Adeniyi Ojuope, a psychologist at Elite Life Consulting in Abuja, delivered a poignant lecture on “The Silent Battles of Sickle Cell”, where he unpacked the psychological burden, societal misconceptions, and emotional resilience required by those living with the disorder.

In a rousing empowerment talk, Theodore Otu, Founder of Gezelle Kobi Concept and a sickle cell advocate, delivered a transformative message titled “You Are More Than Your Blood: Owning Your Identity.” Otu urged attendees to embrace their full potential and reject the limiting labels often associated with their health status.

The atmosphere lightened with interactive games, fostering a sense of community and togetherness before the event wound down with free genotype testing offered to attendees.

Finally, Daniel Ojo, CEO of Mirror Mí Creations, gave the vote of thanks, expressing profound appreciation to all speakers, contributors, and guests. Ojo underscored the importance of community-driven initiatives and reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to advocacy and support.

In conclusion to the day’s activities, attendees were invited to suggest a theme for the 2026 edition, ultimately choosing “More Than My Blood” a theme that encapsulates the spirit of empowerment, resilience, and identity that defined the day.
