Gender Equality in Judiciary essential for strengthening democracy and just society – Nyako

In observance of the International Day of Women Judges, celebrated every 10 March, the President of the International Association of Women Judges, Binta Nyako, has called for continued advocacy for gender equality in the judiciary as essential for strengthening democratic institutions and fostering a just society.

She said in a statement made available to TheShield, that the role of women in the judiciary has evolved significantly over the years, reflecting broader societal changes toward gender equality.

“As we look to the future, continued advocacy for gender equality in the judiciary remains essential for strengthening democratic institutions and fostering a just society.” The President said.

She noted that women judges brought diverse perspectives and experiences to the bench, enriching judicial decision-making and enhancing the representation of women’s rights and issues in the legal system.

Their presence, she said further, challenges traditional notions of authority and competence in law, promoting a more inclusive environment.

“Despite these advancements, women in the judiciary often face systemic barriers, including underrepresentation in higher courts and persistent biases. Their contributions are sometimes undermined by stereotypes and a lack of mentorship opportunities. Encouragingly, initiatives aimed at increasing women’s participation in the judiciary are gaining momentum, leading to a more equitable legal landscape.” The statement noted further.

Nyako asserted that “Ultimately, the empowerment of women in the judiciary is crucial not only for achieving gender parity but also for ensuring the fair administration of justice. A judiciary that reflects the diversity of society is better equipped to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of all individuals.”
