Shaibu mocks Obaseki following Edo governorship election loss

Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has publicly criticized Governor Godwin Obaseki after the latter lost his own local government area in the recently concluded governorship election. 

Shaibu expressed a sense of vindication during an interview with Arise TV on Monday, stating that he had won in his unit, ward, and local government, while Obaseki’s defeat highlighted his electoral shortcomings.

“I feel vindicated; even the governor couldn’t win his local government. I won my unit, ward, and local government,” Shaibu declared, emphasizing that he believes Obaseki has never won an election without assistance. 

He called on the outgoing governor to apologize to the people of Edo State for his failures in office.

He said, “What is left now is for him to go back and start begging and apologizing to the people of Edo State and he has a lot of them that he needs to go and apologize to.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the election, securing 291,667 votes. Obaseki’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), garnered 247,274 votes, while Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party finished third with 22,763 votes.
